Headshot photography in the studio has the advantages of different lighting set ups: artificial lights and available light, which is another way of describing window light. This space was chosen for its extra large windows facing East and South. This gorgeous light stream in all morning and most of the afternoon. This headshot was created with the abundant, directional window light from a late afternoon. The directionality has created a very masuline quality to this headshot that works really well for this subject.
The way in which wardrobing interacts with a background in a headshot photo, can elevate a headshot from good to great. If the background is too bright and the foreground is not nicely balanced with it, the background can become the center of attention in the frame. In this headshot I intentionally used a blue background because my client is wearing a blue jacket. Working with a monochromatic palette in a headshot, allowed the subject to be the focus of attention in the frame. The background melts away.
